Docentric AX Template Designer Overview

Docentric AX Designer - Data Source Pane

<p>Docentric AX Template Designer is actually MS Word with a special Add-In whereas ordinary Word documents act as report and document templates. Here we can see Docentric AX Add-In ribbon tab and the Data Source pane showing the template data source schema. Each report data source contains three sections: main report data, report parameters and additional general data.</p>

Docentric AX Designer and MS Word

<p>When we need a tabular report, we will use Word's tables including Word's design and layout options. We will bind a table row to an item list e.g. purchase order list from the report data source, and each cell to a particular item's data field e.g. purchase order ID, order date etc. Instead of tables, we can also use Word's bulleted or numbered lists.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - Preview Data

<p>While designing a template, we can preview the report. A template data source always contains sample data used for previewing. On the Data Source pane we can open XML editor to examine or change the template sample data. Changing sample data is helpful if we want to test a report against different data values. However, the XML editor will warn us if the changed data does not conform to the schema.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - Element Tree Pane

<p>Each template is tagged with so called Tagging elements. They represent dynamic content and are bound to data fields. During report generation each Tagging element will be replaced with the corresponding data. The Element Tree pane shows used Tagging elements enabling quick navigation through the template.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - List Tagging Element

<p>Word's table in the template is bound to the list of purchase orders. This is achieved through the List tagging element. To set or change data binding of tagging elements we use so called Binding Control. In addition to Point & Click in the Binding Control we can also write XPath to filter or sort list of purchase orders. Sorting is easier to accomplish through the dedicated form as shown in the picture.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - Field Tagging Element

<p>The first Word's table column in the template displays the current purchase order ID. This is achieved through the Field tagging element bound to the PurchId data field. This time in the Binding Control we have selected "Data Context" that represents current purchase order in the context of the parent List tagging element bound to the purchase order list. Each Field tagging element can also contain Format String information that will apply during the report generation.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - If Tagging Element

<p>The second Word's table in the template is conditionally rendered depending on the values of some report parameters. This is achieved through the If tagging element. If the If tagging element is bound to an XPath expression evaluated to True during report generation, then the report will contain all content tagged by this element in the template, and vice versa. XPath Editor is useful for writing XPath expressions.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - Formatting Images

<p>We can use Image tagging elements to enable dynamic images in a report. Once this placeholder is added to a template, we can use various Word's format options for pictures. Image tagging element can be bound to the image binary data which is a part of the template data source, or to the image URI.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - Quick Builder

<p>Quick Builder is a smart tool which speeds up design process. It allows us to insert tagging elements to a template which are already bound to particular data from the template data source. It also recognizes the current context of already placed tagging elements e.g. List tagging element as shown in the picture.</p>

Docentric AX Designer - Design and End User Mode

<p>When designing a template, we can choose to use so called End User Mode. In all panes e.g. the Data Source pane we then see records and fields of certain types which represent our template data source (schema). If we don't use End User Mode, then we see XML elements and attributes as they are, since a template data source is actually an XML (schema). We can also turn on so called Design Mode, which will show all tagging elements on a template.</p>
