How to Install Docentric AX via Models

A preferred way to install Docentric AX reporting solution in a D365FO development environment is by importing Docentric AX model files. This deployment strategy doesn’t only gives you access to the product’s X++ source code but more importantly, a clean way of creating a single Deployment Package containing all packages and models that need to be deployed to a staging or production environment of your client. In other words, Docentric AX models and all other developed and customized models are merged into a single Deployment Package.

In order to install Docentric AX solution on a D365FO system you need to obtain two model files:

  • Docentric AX model file (e.g. Docentric AX.axmodel)
  • Docentric AX Extension model file (e.g. Docentric AX Extension.axmodel)

Note that these two models contain complete Docentric AX solution and there are no external dependencies or services to configure or install. After Docentric AX model files have been properly applied on a D365FO system, Docentric AX solution becomes fully functional.

Please note that from Docentric AX version 3.1.0 we introduces an additional model, Docentric AX Emails, supported for Platform 10 and up, which improves the built-in Email Templates functionality, usually used for Retail orders or workflow email notifications. If you want to enable Improved Email Templates, please import and build the Docentric AX Emails model along with these two core models: Docentric AX and Docentric AX Extension.

Installing Docentric AX

Follow the steps below to complete the installation.

1. Import the two model files using the »ModelUtil.exe« tool.

This tool is located in the Packages Bin folder (typically, C:\Packages\Bin or C:\AosService\PackagesLocalDirectory\Bin). Run Command Prompt as Administrator and navigate to the Bin directory of your Packages folder. Execute the command for importing the two Docentric AX models:

Example:

2. Build the imported models.

In Visual Studio select the »Dynamics 365 -> Build Models…« menu. In the Model Build dialog select the newly imported Docentric AX and Docentric AX Extension model packages and press the Build button.

If you don’t see Docentric packages in the list, refresh models by clicking the »Dynamics 365 -> Model Management -> Refresh Models« menu item and then try again.
It might happen that you will need to build the models twice, in order to compile without errors.

3. Synchronize the database.

In Visual Studio click the »Dynamics 365 -> Synchronize Database…« menu item and press the Synchronize button in the shown dialog.

Docentric AX is now installed and fully functional. Note that you still need to apply a license in order to unlock the product, unless you are using Docentric AX Free Edition.
